I might start working on a Blades in the Dark hack inspired by the Persona video game series. I think the pacing of BitD and the system can work really well with the way those games are played.
I’m just starting the thinking process so if you’re fan of the series and have some neat ideas don’t hesitate to hit me up. Here are some ideas I got on the spot:
– Tarot card name for playbooks (or factions?)
– Some abilities could be lock behind a certain social link (+1, +2, or +3 with a faction or character)
– A difference between natural abilities and persona abilities
Sounds intriguing. I’m only about two or three dungeons in to P4: Golden, so not really experienced enough to give much in the way of suggestions, but what you’ve got so far sounds really interesting.
I just finished P5 last night, and was wondering why there isn’t a Persona TRPG yet. I’d be interested!
I’m a huge fan of both Persona and BitD, but the system didn’t feel like a natural fit to me at all. I’m currently still working on the beginnings of a Masks hack for Persona, so you’re my competition now! If you find a good way to adapt BitD mechanics where they’d work well, then all the more power to you because I’d be SUPER into playing that!
Since the long-promised TBZ incarnation of such a project has been slow in coming, I’ll happily keep my eyes peeled for this. (And Blaze’s, too, for that matter.)
Blaze Azelski That’s exactly why I’m sharing my idea here. I’m still not sure if BitD and Persona would work well together. Also, I didn’t delve too deep into Persona yet. Played the third and forth, and watched the fifth one.
The way the games are paced made me think of Blades. You could see the dungeons as score and the weekend and holidays as downtimes. I would replace the factions with the major arcanas as characters with influence on the world.
The thing I have an harder time figuring out is the crews. That’s where I would probably take inspiration from other medias to fill the blanks with a focus on “dealing with the unconscious world”.
In the end you might be right though. Masks is way closer to the feeling in Persona if you take it as it is. I will see where my ideas will lead me.
There are various Blades hacks that only have one crew type so you don’t necessarily need more. That said, as a person who hasn’t played Persona, you could get milage out of making crews that deal with unconscious mind in different ways. One could be for trying to exploit it, another about helping people, a third about unlocking the true meaning of the universe through delving into the parallel magic world.
Persona 5 would be a great fit for blades, as they are effectively a criminal gang 🙂
Etienne T.Harvey, I don’t know if you still working on or considering this hack, but if you are, definitely look at Andrew Gillis’ Girl by Moonlight hack. It has some stuff that you could definitely use/alter.

My Persona hack of Masks is probably as far as it’s going to be for a while, so I’m sharing it here.

I kinda left the project aside on my part but I will definitely take a look at yours. If I end up playtesting it, I will make sure to get in touch to give you some feedback. I read a little bit of it and it seems really interesting. I am also following closely Andrew Gillis’ project and can’t wait to see it comes to fruition.
Blaze Azelski Blaze Azelski Coolness!
