I faintly remember there being a “low/street level superhero” hack in the works. Did I imagine this?
I ask because I’ve been wanting to run a game where the players struggle desperately each session and then Saitama, One Punch Man comes in and solves their problems in one punch rendering their challenge and hardships almost mute. The problem is that I needed a system where players wouldn’t mind the struggle. Then I had a shower moment this morning after remembering I gave two players traumas last night and they thought it was brilliant.
Although I’m not too sure Blades and Superheroes mix. I think C Rank style Superheroes might work quite well.
tl;dr; Looking for supers hack for one punch man where players will eventually resent me and call me names behind my back.
p.s. Any thoughts or feelings on this idea. Feel free to comment.
I keep thinking that’s what Vigilantes is, but alas.
There’s Vigilantes, and then there’s a B-list Supervillain hack. No street level superheroes.
Alfred Rudzki “…there’s a B-list Supervillain hack”
Is there? Where can I find this necessary item?
I’ll take a gander at the newest Vigilantes version. Could be a way of looking at it.
Benjamin Davis The hack is called “The Doomed”
From the Kickstarter:
“The Doomed takes Blades in the Dark to the worlds of superheroes. You’ll be playing the small-time villains trying to make it big in a world where an alien invasion is just another Tuesday. New characters and crew types give you everything you need to play in the style of The Superior Foes of Spider-Man and the Giffen/DeMatteis Injustice League. By Sage Latorra (co-author of Dungeon World).”
EDIT: Just to be clear, this hack is still ways off, from what I gathered.
Are you certain this is an experience your players would enjoy? I would be irked enough to leave the game, personally.
Thanks, Thomas Imbert. I shall lie in wait, biding my time…
It’s definitely a setup that needs strong buy-in. Not one to spring on the players without warning.
I mean, I don’t think you want superman descending often if at all. Just that the setting/premise of the game is that there are a handful of people out there like Superman and Saitama who are boundlessly powerful but your team is not made up of them.
Benjamin Davis I have been turning the mental gears on a Worm reskin for BitD and hope to get to work on it next week. Wom is a gritty, grim web serial about a teenaged superhero team. I personally think the setting is a potentially great crossover for Blades but I’m still solving the problem of how to handle superpowers. I think the solution is ultimately that the players and GM will need to have very open communication channels about determining position and effect (even more so than vanilla Blades).
Benjamin Davis Brandon Perkins Yeah I’m not going to be like “Oh hi guys let’s play Blades. Oh we’re playing One Punch Man trolololol”. The premise would be clearly set out and player buy in would be expected. At my rpg club, each block you vote for the game you want to join. There’s enough of us that you’ll not be forced into a game.
Seth Weinberg I had the same thought about superpowers. Not every system is cut out for every genre and that’s by no means an attack on Blades. It’s just in the same way I wouldn’t use D&D or Savage Worlds to run a investigation game when I could use Gumshoe.
What I think it may do well is the street level vigilantes style justice which is obviously the reason why Sean offered to create it.
Saying that I am making a hack with magic and aren’t superpowers and magic just the same ><
Seth Weinberg, I’m familiar with Worm. I have chapter 17 (Migration) in my pocket right now. 🙂
I am actually working on a superhero hack that I am working to be along the lines of Madam Mirage and Overwatch.
I hope to post a small build in about two three weeks.
