Hey all–I’m interested in Blades in the Dark as a system, but the ghostpunk industrial fantasy setting, while cool, isn’t what I’m looking for. Has anyone else done the work of making a slightly more setting-agnostic, or at least supernatural-free hack of Blades yet?
I’ve seen Scum and Villainy, and Blades Against Darkness, but they go off too far in other directions for what I want. I’m basically just looking for a straight Peaky Blinders-style game: old timey gangsters, doing scores, getting into trouble, and indulging vices, just like core BitD, but without all the ghosts and demons and occult stuff. (Plus, I’m spoiled by Apocalypse World’s collaborative worldbuilding–I don’t want to play in someone else’s world, no matter how cool it is!)
Has anyone seen or done anything like this yet? Any pointers if I end up having to do the hacks myself?
Theres some modern criminal hacks in the works (something inspired by racing movies was floating around and I wish I remember the name of it).
Me I would just change the magic action to a social, near psychic thing (Sense comes to mind) and take out the magic abilities; your game would be pretty much there with updated factions.
Check out Misbehavin’ over at patreon.com – Allie Bustion is creating tabletop games, supplements, and hacks! | Patreon maybe? It’s got a bit of fantasy still but more about prohibition era stuff.
Coneycatchers is a reskin of the game with new character and crew types, factions, situations, and a guide for playing in Elizabethan London. One of the stretch goals from the kickstarter, assuming it becomes available similar to Scum and Villainy, might be what you are looking for. Hopefully more details will surface when bladesinthedark.com goes live.
Travis Geery Ooh, Coneycatchers looks almost perfect! Thanks for the heads up on that one.
