So we just started playing Blades in the Dark, one of my friends purchased it for me after I watched the youtube videos of the game being played and basically squee’d towards all my friends.
We decided on what crew we wanted to be and, as planned, they decided on the crew I was least excited about and decided to play a Cult. The rest of the crews in the version 8 release easily click to me but I’m having a harder time wrapping my head around the missions they will be doing and how to keep everything from being approached as Arcane. Of course, I’ll throw some more “mundane” missions and scores in there as they look for it but they wanted the Cult and it’d be rude to deny them the supernatural, haunted, and creepy arcane side of things.
So what I’m asking is for some fluff ideas, thoughts and ideas about what kind of scores fit the kind of operations and scores that Cults tends to do. I’m sure once I get a little bit of some ideas, I’ll be able to throw things together much better.
Have you peeked at page 111 in v8? Also, I’d go with the starting sitch and urge them to do the score with the rune-covered widget, modified to taste. Things will flow from there and the group can fill in details.
Yeah, I’ve looked through the opportunities that are listed and they’ve basically set themselves up to be wrapped up quite deviously in the situation the book initially offers (Slide is friends with the Blacklamper’s boss, the Cult’s sacred sites take a large portion of Red Sash territory into theirs).
I guess I’m just nervous because BitD is a very different system than my first real love, Savage Worlds. I’m sure once we dive into it and ride by the seat of our pants, we’ll get flowing from there. I was just curious to see what other Cults have done and how the GM worked around with their Forgotten God and what not.
I was pretty nervous my first sessions, but once the group’s got some momentum and experience, it sails smoothly. Honestly, I’d ask your players what kind of things interest them. Do they want to attack a shrine to a rival god? Gain followers? Murder enemies of their god? Erect shrines? Smuggle illegal artifacts? I would expect much of what they do to depend on what they worship.
Yeah, we’re going to see what happens when the game goes on. Luckily, my players are super excited for it and are mostly embracing the “hold on by the edge of their pants” mentality.
I’m still polishing my game, so please don’t hesitate to share you experience and ideas!
I definitely will! They all seem to be aimed at violence against the Empire. Three of them are Tycherosi and the other two are from Skovlan. I think they were wanting to summon their God’s wrath to destroy the noble districts and weed out the corruption at the top.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens as the ball gets rolling!
Fighting corruption with corruption? I love it!
