John Harper I am curious if Bows and Crossbows are normally considered outlawed because killing with them are silent while guns attract attention normally? Hunting wildlife really isn’t a thing around Duskvol.

What types of legality in the setting for stuff like this?

  1. They’re not outlawed. Old weapons like that are deprecated for the same reasons as they were in our world.

This can be tricky to communicate to gamers, who usually expect bows and crossbows to be the equivalent of silent guns. I’ve mostly side-stepped the issue and simply left bows out of the game rather than writing an essay about it.

  2. The tough, cunning, and weird things that survived the cataclysm.

The game is about what happens in Duskwall, so I don’t go into details. I might do a Deathalnds playset someday, though.

  3. Crossbows are quite illegal here because they’re deadly and quarrels can’t be matched to weapon the way that bullets can (and because a bigwig’s prized cow was shot with one once…).

  4. In our campaign, crossbows are long out of production and must be made to order. Carrying one is not strictly illegal, but will make everyone around 99% sure that you are a criminal. Bows are a Silver Nails thing.
