Casual Friday thoughts, what are everyone’s different “fill in what this is” roles?

Like the Sentinel or Psychonaut friends in the game? In your games and with your players and characters what are those? I’m interested to hear the different interpretation and creative options people have for this because they’re sometimes ones I struggle with.

Those are the 2 examples that came to mind but any other things where there’s a term in the book and it’s left open to the players to define in the world is also open for inclusion and discussion.

  1. The big one for us is Spirit Wells, mainly because I just introduced one in last night’s game. Our Whisper came across one that was apparently unguarded, and one of his pet ghosts got too close to it, there was a brilliant flash of light, and we ended on a cliffhanger. I have some ideas about what actually happened, but the players are speculating already.

  2. It was in a blind alley in Charhollow. The prevailing theory is that it was just recently appeared (which I told them was an extremely rare occurrence, but not unheard of).

  3. Andrew Shields I’m aware of that thread, I’m not asking for a specific answer to what one is I’m asking what other people have come up with and seen across the multiple instances in the book in their games. But there’s a few cool examples in that thread so thanks for linking it.

  4. Weather, where food comes from, how deep canals are and what lives in them, what the Forgotten Gods are, how banking works, what the overall city governance is like, how goods are produced, how the city is lit, how dangerous the lands outside the walls are, tech level of ships.

  5. One of my players playing as a hound has made his Sentinel friend an experienced Rail-jack who’s job it is to handle the delicate task of receiving an incoming train.

The role involves determining how much the lightning gate needs to be reduced in power to let the train in without harm to the passengers/cargo whilst ensuring that no spirits take advantage of the break.

The job also involves observing the incoming train and signaling the Railjacks on board to determine whether the train needs to be quarantined or in extreme cases derailed to ensure the safety of the city.

So far the player has used this contact to get information on incoming goods and travelers from the lines that this sentinel works and to acquire the services of railjack teams for a variety of legal and illegal tasks.
