Quickie: Bodies must be destroyed in electroplasm to prevent spirit release, but what happens if the corpse is irrecoverably burnt in a normal fire?

  1. I’d personally say 50/50 between normal ghost and something fire-related like a cinderwraith or ash-shade. Now, if they DIED in a fire, the odds of the latter go up.

  2. Why not releasing the spirit from the ashes of a body? Ah, story coming up: What if the ashes is (intenionally or not) spread about Doskvol? Maybe the ghost is unable to assemble itself as a whole… but he/she will try to do it, resulting in haunting of dusty body parts all over town. Like it 🙂

It think the entanglement is called “Unquiet Dead”. Let your crew try! 🙂

  3. Unless the specialized methods of the Spirit Wardens are used (or someone else figures out an arcane work around!) I would say the person becomes a ghost. In other words, I think that it has less to do with the body being destroyed and more to do with their alchemical process.

  4. brainstorming: It sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t. Long ago, before the development of electroplasm, corpses had to be burnt, with special rituals to increase the efficacy of the fire. In some places people still operate this way (e.g. the wilds of Severos). This is also why witches were traditionally burned at the stake. (“Witch” meaning “arcanist who is politically unpopular.”) This also means that the Brigade puts extra emphasis on rescuing people from fires, even “rescuing” corpses, because if it’s burned to ash there’s no guarantee the spirit will be destroyed (maybe the Brigade is an ancient offshoot of the Spirit Wardens and still subservient to them, on paper).
