Yay! BitD is great, but I have to admit, the scifi reskins/hacks are what got me firmly behind it.
I may have the playbooks done soonish, and might run a playtest or four online at that point >_> The trick is going to be the ship sheets (the S&V equivalent of crew sheets).
Kinda intimidated by the layout of those atm.
Stras Acimovic Definitely looking forward to this one! May borrow the ‘Fargo’ intro I’ve been contemplating for Star Wars World games:
“The following is a true story.
The events described took place on Tatooine, in and around Mos Eisley four years after the Battle of Yavin.
At the request of the survivors, the names have been changed. Out of respect for the deceased, everything else has been told exactly as it occurred.”
I’m so psyched for this hack. Also, from working on a Star Trek hack, I can sympathize about the difficulties of making a ship sheet. It’s not easy.
Dylan Green I started with reading some books (The non-designer’s design book, Making and Breaking the Grid, and Elements of Typographic style). These have proven incredibly useful even in my day job. Being able to name rules and apply them has actually changed how I look at a lot of things (downside? You’ll never look at a menu in a restaurant the same way again).
Then I got inDesign and started watching videos on that. Adobe has tutorials built in, but I also recommend: http://indesignsecrets.com/
Many problems have specific solutions (typography has it’s own list of sites forex).
Bear in mind I consider myself still a rank amateur at this game, but I’m learning as fast as I can.
And of course everything here is hat tips to John Harper and all my designer friends without whom I’d mostly be crying in a corner and hand-drawing sheets in notebooks still.
Stras Acimovic I would just like to state my interest in those playtests if you run low on internal playtesters. 😉
I’ll put you on the list 🙂
I’ve never seen such a wretched hive…
Soooooo awesome
Stras, I too am begging to help! Does me running Edge of the Empire for the past year for a group of Star Wars junkies help? 😀 Either way, I’m looking forward to your thing!
If I don’t go Fargo, I will have to go Quentin Tarantino and Guy Ritchie. Pretty sure there’s a Fiasco playset out there I can mine for inspiration…
Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Blasters!
something tells me playtesters won’t be hard to find. 🙂
Stras Acimovic if there is still room, I’d love to help play test as well!
Stras Acimovic I can also offer up my time for playtesting, whether ships sheets are complete or not.
Protip – Marry a graphic designer. It worked for me.
For all the folks here, I’ll post at least one playtest in this group soon as I’m ready, and positions will largely depend (in my experience) on who is free on the days/times I can run.
Adam Schwaninger that’s not the worst problem in the world to have 😛
Mark Griffin I’m laughing so hard right now ^_~
The ship as a crew is a FANTASTIC idea, BTW!
There are some things that work really well for Blades that I’m not sure work really well in a space opera and vica versa – so I’m trying some things out (and we’ll see how it shakes out in playtest). But a group is a crew on a ship, and a ship has a singular purpose (even when the individual crew member has a different agenda). A smuggling vessel is a different beast than a bounty hunting vessel and so on.
I’m not suggesting stealing other people’s stuff, but your concept reminds me of this:

Are they not all Scoundrels? 🙂
Adam Schwaninger nope. http://imgur.com/pTOG4kz
Oh god it’s the Lando playbook. Thank you.
Also Leia, Inarra/Shepherd Booke, Rigel etc. ^_~
Any good resource for layout advice?

I too am working on a ship sheet for Skies of Fire
Vandel J. Arden streampunk/diesel punk Zeppelin hack?
Look up the Skies of Fire Kickstarter and you will see what I work on 🙂
