On the advice of someone I forget I watched the movie John Wick last night. Totally solid action flick and obviously directed by stunt people and seemingly influenced by stealth action video games.

I mention it here even though it’s modern day, as it has some good very BitD like elements with the stealth action and the various underworld people and factions bumping up against each other. Watching the flick, I could easily see in my head the progress clocks and devil’s bargains at play.

Also the scene with the cleaners taking the bodies away is great and made me think whomever has the job of being cleaner in Duskwall has to make a pretty penny.

  1. Yes its great. By the way, while so watch Killjoy i make notes of their scores for play. Its having a very strong BitD feel too. A gang of Headhunters on a outcast miningworld, between Corporations, Religions, Resistance and other factions.

  2. Someone in this community was all like “You gotta watch Peakey Blinders” and I did, and that shaped a lot of my thinking for enterprises. I think that’s a good one for focusing more on the daring and consequences of the crew under the direction of a leader, who handles the strategic battles waged with a currency of power.

I’ve been meaning to see John Wick. I’m in this weird place in my entertainment where if it shows up on Netflix I’m likely to watch it, but otherwise? It’s tough to track down. I hear Kingsman is in the same vein.

Surely we’ve talked about how Daredevil is a useful reverse view of Blades in the Dark, from the perspective of a handful of determined people making a mess of an otherwise tidy criminal enterprise. =)

Peaky Blinders definitely. You can have the smart one, the tough one, and the freakin’ nuts one in the gang. John Wick was good action but not that stealthy for my liking. Lots of shootouts and the main enemies being magically hard to hit for the trained assassin protagonist. Kingsman though, is a masterpiece. I would definitely play a Colin Firth Slide!

  4. For the other lovers of great action… I put this on another conversation I doubt anyone but shields is still reading, but thought ya might like this…

this is one of my favorite quotes of all time regarding the “action” genre…

“I love and have always loved and will always love action. Great action to me is better than food, better than sex, better than anything. I remember vividly every single moment of great action I have ever seen in the theater, when I saw it, and the elation I felt when I saw it. Action makes my heart pound just thinking about it. I’m in love with the heroic ideal which is probably kind of corny in an age of advancing cynicism but I can’t help it. For a man on film, there is no greater moment than the instant when he suddenly gives up everything he knows or thought he ever wanted and starts whipping ass for love or principle.”

Olly Paul- as a side note, if you loved the action in kingsmen,  the fight scene coordinator there was Brad Allen I pretty much run to see any flick he’s involved with now. other credits: Kick Ass, chronicles of Riddick, Pacific Rim, and…

Hellboy II (be sure to watch the DVD extras where they explain how they used multiple trampolines to launch a somersaulting guy with no wires 35 ft into the air to land on a ledge in a fighting pose… convinced me superheros may be real lol)

    and many more.
