There is some reason for ongoing discussion of the technology of firearms in Duskwall. Here is my suggestion, and also how it will work in my games.

  1. THE theory in the 19th century on the meanings of combustion based on Phlogiston (a stuff which you met in AD&D-Spelljammer for the same reason).

For being wrong, it was an important part for the development in recognizing chemical reactions like oxidation and the determination of lye and acid.

Perhaps it is helpful as not-so-wrong intime technical term?

  2. Dominic Niederhoff I could definitely see using that for an alchemical substance used by esoteric scholars in Duskwall. But I’m not going to use it for the firearms; phlogiston was about heat and burning, and I’ve made the guns work on a principle of chill and death energy. Which I think is cool. =)
