  1. Same problem for me here. i’m ok with a “non realist” Setting, but a little “how those guys manage to feed the population” is my minimum for my suspension of disbelief. Otherwise the rest of the game is great, but a tiny little realism here couldn’t harm the setting.

  2. What do I look like, a farmer? The butcher, the baker and the cook at the Slap Bang might worry where food comes from. Not me. I worry where the next coin’s coming from and who’s next coming for me.

At least that’s why I play Blades.

  3. Not a problem for me if the answer is “you eat the green tab from the strange crematorium”. I just say that only a simple line about “where the food come from”, will be cool.

  4. There has been a similar discussion I think.

    Well some of my ideas:

    -) Seafood

There is a group named Eels which does imply that there are actual eels in the sea. With Duskwall having a broad access to the sea – like all city – I do imagine boats go out fishing and return with seaweed, seafruit and fish. Leviathan are certainly one creature that haunt the sea, though I imagine there are other things like those that can be found in sunless sea.

In general I would go for fish that are closer to the deep sea or would live in the deep sea in our world as most of them do really look creepy.

(Just google deep sea fish XD)

-) Plants that grow in earth or do belong to the Nightshade family

Most famously potatoes. But as well stuff like aubergines, eggplants, tomatoes, peppers. Maybe some dark berries.

    -) Mushrooms

There might be mushrooms that grow in dark places or whose digestible flesh can be farmed in mines as they can grow underground.

    -) Leviathan

With various issues in regards to demons and ghosts.. some think its a reason not to eat them, some take it as the reason why to eat them.

    -) Rodents

Rat Raclette, Pidgeon Pie, God Jerky, “roof rabbit”(cat)

    -) Game

There are deathland scavengers and I assume they do bring some twisted game home.

    -) People

There are a lot of them and there might be various reasons from power issues (Hannibal) to trying to absorb / preserve their ghost or just necessity.

  5. Nice. Or you could feed some porc with all those mushroom.  Like a said, a few words in the final draft would be cool. Those kind of question and answer could lead to a lot of interesting developement in game.

After Lady BlackBird and it’s Cloud World, John Harper is defenitively a anti-farmer World guy 🙂

  6. There might be Farms inside (I think he mentioned a market?) or outside.

    Regarding the outside ones its not like someone has to stand by and watch the crop grow or protect it from getting stolen.. ^^;

  7. I wrote on the KS page “What do people eat in Duskwall if the sea is dark ink and the countryside is ghost-haunted wasteland? Eel Pies are mentioned in the Quickstart, so I’m thinking of weird blind sea creatures and vast factory farms and estates ringed with lightning fences…”

Ghosts might protect your crops from being stolen, but not from wild animals (rabbits, deer).

  8. For normal wild animals a usual fence should do the trick. As well as plant crops that aren’t as tasty to animals (deer don’t eat wheat, I think .. or potatoes)

  9. Rooftop bunnies, I love this, great name for a band.

I would use it if not because my city is infamous for having eaten cats during hard times. Can’t fall into stereotypes 😛
