Music!

John Harper’s mention of Neko Case’s “Furnace Room Lullaby” as the Quick Start theme song really helped cement the setting for me, and will likely be used at my table to start sessions. Jeffry Crews has done a great job of posting suitable songs as well.

I would like to see more music suggestions in the final book, much the way White Wolf did for the original Vampire Storyteller’s Guide back in the early 90s (I still have a “Songs For A Gothic Punk World” mixtape in storage somewhere). It would be great if the authors for the unlocked settings would follow suit and include a suggested theme song (at least) for their works as well.

Surely I’m not the only one who would like music recommendations, right? Maybe the titles could even be hyperlinked in the PDF to iTunes/Amazon/Google Play to give the authors a small slice of the sale of any songs purchased…

  1. I have so many ideas when it comes to music for games, but I really dread posting music choices because music can be so personal for people, so thanks for the excellent complement.

So, if your out there and turned away by the music Im posting because you like Megadeth or NIN or Einstürzende Neubauten then use that music and forget about what I like.

Having said all that… you really should listen to Abigail Washburns dream like ablbum City of Refuge, Bring Me my Queen is pretty awesome… super cool for a firefly game especially with its Chinese sounding six sting banjo music.

The link below is for her tiny desk concert video….

Also you could mine the works of the Pre Human League synth band The Future… especially if you want a BBC low budget sci-fi sound… (For those of you who want to use Blades to do Blakes 7) The song I link to below is called Cairo.

  2. want to play up the desperate paranoia of being a bunch of lowlife criminals? go for the Mountain Goats’ We Shall All Be Healed

most applicable song: “The Young Thousands”

  3. I was putting together an annotated track list, as others have already added some recommendations I’ll share mine here:

=>  “Dishonored” Soundtrack by Daniel Licht (and others)

    Available on iTunes:

    https://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/dishonored-original-game-soundtrack/id598310747

A clean sounding modern soundtrack which is in parts mournful and thoughtful, in others sinister and ominous, mixed with a few tense and frantic combat moments.  All of that and creepy children’s vocal version of “The Drunken Whaler”.

=>  “Thief” (OST) by Luc St. Pierre

Available as CD and MP3 download from Amazon and on iTunes:

    https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/thief-original-soundtrack/id794514603

Whilst the game itself didn’t live up to expectations, the soundtrack is worth your time in tracking down.  Another solid modern game soundtrack. Dramatic, ominous, and sometimes claustrophobic. I’d especially recommend the track “The House of Blossoms”, for those tense and stealthy moments.

=>  Thief 1, 2 and Deadly Shadows Soundtracks by Eric Brosius

Available for download as extras with the games on GOG.com:

    (http://www.gog.com/game/thief_gold ; http://www.gog.com/game/thief_2_the_metal_age ; and http://www.gog.com/game/thief_3)

Eerie, tense and stealthy classic game soundtracks.  Maybe a little uneven, as it’s sometimes a little in-your-face and has occasional oddly placed sound effects.  All three fit the environment of urban scoundrels well.

=>  “The Old City: Leviathan” Official Soundtrack

Available as CD and MP3 download from Bandcamp:

    https://cryochamber.bandcamp.com/album/the-old-city-ost

Slower, more thoughtful and less dramatic, this is a dark ambient soundtrack for urban exploration.  The album can be streamed from the Bandcamp page to try before you buy.

=>  “The Order: 1886” Soundtrack by Jason Graves

Available as CD and MP3 download from Amazon, and on iTunes:

    https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/order-1886-video-game-soundtrack/id963164281

Modern classical for when the characters are stalking something sinister through the grimy brick-walled back-alleys.

=>  The Crow Score by Graeme Revell

    Available on iTunes:

    https://itunes.apple.com/ca/album/crow-original-motion-picture/id725135289

The classic dark urban soundtrack. Combines a dark, dangerous, and despair-laced mood with a “world music” edge suggestive of the multiculturalism of Duskwall.  Over the years it has become one of my “go to” CDs.

=> The Crow: City of Angels Score (also by Graeme Revell) is more Gothic (and in my opinion the better of the two by a shade), unfortunately it’s less easy to find (I couldn’t find a digital release).

(With these do double check that you’re getting the Graeme Revell scores rather than the ‘various artists’ soundtracks CDs).
